Bacterial contamination in milk kitchens in pediatric hospitals in Salvador, Brazil BJID
Cairo,Romilda Castro; Silva,Luciana Rodrigues; Andrade,Carol Ferreira de; Barberino,Maria Goreth de Andrade; Bandeira,Antônio Carlos; Santos,Kleber Pimentel; Diniz-Santos,Daniel R..
Milk may represent an important source of infectious agents to hospitalized pediatric patients. To describe the bacterial microflora isolated from the hands, stools, pharynx of all workers at milk kitchens in pediatric hospitals in the city of Salvador, Brazil, as well as in the formulas prepared by them, we carried out this cross-sectional study with all 91 workers from the 20 milk kitchens of all the public and private hospitals in Salvador, Brazil. Hand and pharynx swabs and stool samples were collected from all workers, as well as samples of the milk and formulas delivered by the kitchens. All samples were cultured for the detection of pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria. Pathogenic bacteria were isolated from 20 (22.0%) and 8 (8.8%) cultures of the...

Factors Affecting Outsourcing for Information Technology Services in Rural Hospitals: Theory and Evidence AgEcon
Whitacre, Brian E.; Fannin, James Matthew; Barnes, James N..
As health information technology becomes more prevalent for most healthcare facilities, hospitals across the nation are choosing between performing this service in-house and outsourcing to a technology firm in the health industry. This paper examines factors affecting the information technology (IT) outsource decision for various hospitals. Using 2004 data from the American Hospital Association, logistic regression models find that governmental ownership and a proxy variable for hospitals that treat more severe injuries positively impact the probability of outsourcing for IT services.

Indoor Air Quality in the Hospital: The Influence of Heating, Ventilating and Conditioning Systems BABT
Božić,Jelena; Ilić,Predrag; ilić,Svetlana.
Abstract Clean, fresh air is the most important requirement for good indoor air quality (IAQ) in all buildings, but it is especially important with regard to the environments within hospitals and other healthcare facilities. The literature indicates that buildings with heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems may have an increased risk of sick building syndrome (SBS) and building-related illness (BRI) if they are not well maintained. Microorganisms are brought into hospitals by people, air currents, water, construction materials and equipment. The main objective of this study was to assess the degree of fungal and bacterial contamination in the University Clinical Centre in Banja Luka, which is directly connected to the HVAC system....

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus sp. colonizing health care workers of a cancer hospital BJM
Costa,Dayane de Melo; Kipnis,André; Leão-Vasconcelos,Lara Stefânia Netto de Oliveira; Rocha-Vilefort,Larissa Oliveira; Telles,Sheila Araújo; André,Maria Cláudia Dantas Porfírio Borges; Tipple,Anaclara Ferreira Veiga; Lima,Ana Beatriz Mori; Ribeiro,Nádia Ferreira Gonçalves; Pereira,Mayara Regina; Prado-Palos,Marinésia Aparecida.
The aim of the study was to analyze epidemiological and microbiological aspects of oral colonization by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus of health care workers in a cancer hospital. Interview and saliva sampling were performed with 149 health care workers. Antimicrobial resistance was determined by disk diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration. Polymerase Chain Reaction, Internal Transcribed Spacer-Polymerase Chain Reaction and Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis were performed for genotypic characterization of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus. Risk factors were determined by logistic regression. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus colonization prevalence was 19.5%, denture wearing (p = 0.03), habit of nail biting (p = 0.04) and preparation and...

Microbial contamination of single-and multiple-dose vials after opening in a pulmonary teaching hospital BJID
Baniasadi,Shadi; Dorudinia,Atosa; Mobarhan,Mandana; Gamishan,Masoumeh Karimi; Fahimi,Fanak.
OBJECTIVES: Intravenous therapy is a complex procedure usually requiring the preparation of the medication in the clinical area before administration to the patient. Breaches in aseptic technique may result in microbial contaminations of vials which is a potential cause of different avoidable infections. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and pattern of microbial contamination of single- and multiple-dose vials in the largest pulmonary teaching hospital in Iran. METHODS: In a period of 2 months, opened single- and multiple-dose vials from different wards were sampled by a pharmacist. The name of the medication, ward, labeling of the vials, the date of opening, and storing temperature were recorded for each vial. Remained contents of each vial were...
